| One hundred thousand welcomes to the web home of the Port City Café and Pub. Amazing as it may seem, gently nestled on the banks of the Ohio River, here in this remote area of Appalachian Ohio, you’ll find a wee bit of the old sod. The Port City Café and Pub is a curious blend of traditional Irish pub craic and genuine American southern hospitality. Our great food, grand atmosphere and great service make the Pub the perfect gathering place for those seeking a warm refuge, relaxing conversation and friendly camaraderie. We feature a full service bar, with a excellent selection of draught and bottled beers, and a diversity of Irish whiskeys from which to choose; wine, by the glass or bottle, is also available. We also encourage a novel approach to human interaction— conversation. A large part of our guest's experience is getting to know the other guests in a warm and secure atmosphere that lends itself well to a range of ages and interests! |

| Our History Located in the heart of Portsmouth's downtown business district, our pub's design is unique. Built to the imaginative specifications of the original owners, it avoids the trendy "cookie-cutter" look of Irish pub franchises springing up around the world. After many hours of "field research", conducted in as many Irish, Scottish and English pubs as could be found, plans were laid to paper and work begun in earnest. After many months of construction, the Pub opened it's doors in 2004. Our Decor The Port City Café and Pub perfectly blends traditional Irish pub design with our own unique southern Ohio cultural heritage. Through the clever use of recycled building materials, gathered from around the area, the Pub manages to merge our town's own rich cultural heritage with the classic Irish pub decor. When you visit, look around you and note, for example, that the French doors that grace the front and rear entrances once greeted school children as they entered the old U.S. Grant school. The intricate wood trim found throughout the building came from the apartments which once stood above the Pub, and much of the interior leaded glass was rescued from stately riverfront homes that were demolished to make way for Shawnee State University expansion. As you enjoy "a plate and a pint" with us, you are invited to explore and discover other interesting oddments that collectively make up one of the most interestingly furnished pubs you’ll find anywhere. It’s A Pub, Not a Bar! Port City is not a bar, tavern or restaurant – it’s a pub! A true pub emphasizes conversation and relationships. It’s a place where people gather to enjoy each others company in a sociable, sheltered and comfortable environment. To paraphrase a famous Irish poet, “a pub is a special place full of your very best friends, some of whom you just haven’t met yet.” So, we hope that you'll drop by often to renew old acquaintances with some new old friends. Port City -- it's "an Irish experience!" |
